Willamette Places Second in Women's Second Varsity 8+ at WIRA Championships

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. -- Willamette University took second place in the Direct Final of the women's second varsity 8+ on the final day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship Regatta, Sunday, May 1 at Lake Natoma. Western Washington University won the W2V8+.

The winning time registered by Western Washington, the #1 ranked team in NCAA Division II, was 7:07.2. Willamette, which competes in NCAA Division III, was just 2.7 seconds back at 7:09.9. Humboldt State University placed third at 7:17.5, while the University of California-Santa Barbara club team was fourth at 7:23.1 and Mills College was fifth at 7:46.3.

Also on Sunday, the Bearcats placed second in the Petite Final of the women's varsity 8+ and took third in the Third Final of the men's varsity 8+.

In the WV8+ Petite Final, the crew from the UC-Santa Barbara club garnered first place honors with a time of 6:56.6. Willamette was second at 6:58.0 and Mills was third at 7:00.0

Completing the list of finishers in the WV8+ Petite Final were the University of California-San Diego club team in fourth at 7:06.4, the University of Colorado club in fifth at 7:09.5, Sonoma State in sixth at 7:18.4 and Chapman University in seventh at 7:30.0.

Winning the Third Final in the MV8+ was Sonoma State at 6:13.4. Lewis & Clark College was second with a time of 6:16.0 and the Bearcats were third in 6:20.7. WU, which edged out Pacific Lutheran University at the finish for fifth place in a preliminary heat by 1.3 seconds on Saturday, beat PLU by 11.2 seconds on Sunday. The Lutes finished fourth at 6:31.9.

WV8+: c Blair Davis, 8 Heidi Hunt, 7 Jessie Lovell, 6 Kate Pfeiffer, 5 Lea Griggs, 4 Christina Thorburn, 3 Jenna Chiono, 2 Larissa Stiglich, and bow Sarah Ferrier.

MV8+: c Jenna Shellan, 8 Maxx Kaplan, 7 Till Gwinn, 6 Jackson Lowe 5 David Solomon,  4 Maxwell Mensinger, 3 Nate Keffer, 2 Wesley Dawn, and bow Joel Ribbens.
