Willamette Falls to Clark in Preseason Exhibition Game
Shiluk Scores for Bearcats on Assists from Vazquez and McGrew
VANCOUVER, WASH. -- Willamette University dropped a preseason exhibition game to Clark College (Wash.), 4-1, in men's soccer action on Thursday, Aug. 25. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Willamette, but was rescheduled for Vancouver earlier in the day.
Clark College, a two-year community college that competes in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community College (NWAACC), tallied two goals in the first 45 minutes for a 2-0 halftime lead. Willamette cut the deficit to a single goal when the Brandon Shiluk (So., F, Castro Valley, CA/Castro Valley HS) scored for the Bearcats in the second half.
Willamette, a four-year university that is a member of NCAA Division III, pressed forward in an effort to create a tying goal, but Clark countered by scoring two insurance goals, as the Penguins pulled away.
The goal for Willamette began with a throw-in on the right side of the field about 18 yards from the goal line. Mike McGrew (Jr., MF, Portland, OR/Grant HS) threw the ball toward the edge of the six-yard box, where Adan Vazquez (So., F, Woodburn, OR/Woodburn HS) sent the ball on with a header.
Shiluk, also about six yards out, took an accurate shot to register the goal. McGrew and Vazquez earned assists on the play.
The Bearcats will begin the regular season on Friday, Sept. 2 with a game at Trinity Lutheran University in Everett, Wash. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PDT). WU will play at Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash., on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m.
