SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University football team has received the Volunteer of the Month Award from the Salem-Keizer School District. The Bearcats were selected for the award as a result of their efforts to clean up the landscape and grounds at Waldo Middle School, Hoover Elementary School and Swegle Elementary School on Aug. 20.

WU's involvement with the school district was part of the Bearcats' commitment to the United Way Days of Caring. The Bearcats provided help at the three local schools, plus five other public properties and service organizations. It was the eighth consecutive year that the Willamette football team has participated in the Days of Caring.

The official presentation of the award was made at a Salem-Keizer School Board meeting. Representing the team at the meeting were players Zach Peterson (Jr., WR, Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley HS/Univ. of Arizona) and Jordan Weil (Jr., ILB, Sammamish, WA/Skyline HS).

Kyle Derby and other football players helped clean up the landscape at Waldo Middle School.
