SALEM, ORE. -- Whitworth University scored four goals on just five shots, as the Pirates shut out Willamette University, 4-0, on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Sparks Field. Willamette also had five shots -- and placed three on goal -- but the Bearcats couldn't match Whitworth's accuracy.

The Pirates advanced their record to 6-2-1 overall, 4-1 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette dropped to 3-4-1, including 2-3 in the NWC.

Whitworth tallied the first goal just 6:16 into the match. It was scored by Cameron Bushey on a free kick from the left side of the field. The Pirates extended the lead to 2-0 at 25:41 on a goal by Taylor Willi. He scored on a shot from the right side into the lower left corner of the net. Dion Coxe assisted on the play.

Michael Vandenberg added the third goal at 72:01. He received an assist from Andrew Flint.

The final goal was recorded on a penalty kick with less than seven minutes left in the game. Andrew Woods (Fr., D, Eugene, OR/Marist Catholic HS) was called for a foul in the penalty area. Andrew Glass converted the penalty strike against WU goalkeeper Alfredo Zuniga (Sr., Salem, OR/South Salem HS).

Willi was the only player on either team with more than one shot. He earned two shots for the Pirates. Willamette's three shots on goal were taken by Etienne Galbreath (Jr., D, Portland, OR/Grant HS), Adan Vazquez (So., F, Woodburn, OR/Woodburn HS) and Will O'Neil (So., F, Vashon, WA/Vashon Island HS).

Whitworth goalie Brian Sherpe achieved three saves while earning the shutout. Zuniga made one save for Willamette.

The Bearcats will remain at home on Sunday, Oct. 2, when they will take on Whitman College. Kickoff at Sparks Field is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (PDT).
