Nationally Ranked Corban Shuts Out Willamette, 8-0
SALEM, ORE. -- Corban University junior pitcher Amy Greenough threw the first four innings and allowed just one hit to lead the Warriors to an 8-0 shutout of Willamette University on Thursday, Feb. 23 at Warrior Field on the Corban campus. Greenough struck out six batters and allowed now walks.
The Warriors, ranked #23 in the NAIA, won the game on the run rule in five innings and improved to 11-2 on the season. Willamette dropped to 1-4.
Greenough kept Willamette from creating offensive chances as she improved to 3-0 on the season. WU right fielder Nichole Robertson (Sr., Elk Grove, CA/Franklin HS/Cosumnes River Coll.) recorded a single with two outs in the third inning for the Bearcats' only hit.
Jessica Slate pitched the fifth inning for Corban. Hayley Glantz (Fr., RHP, Reno, NV/Robert McQueen HS) of Willamette tossed the first three innings and moved to 0-2 with the loss.
Corban took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Brittany Chestnut hit an infield single to start the game. She stole second base before advancing to third when Liane DeHart placed a bunt single in front of the plate. DeHart also stole second base. Stephanie Nippert batted next and hit her 10th home run of the season down the left field line. The Bearcats got out of the inning without allowing additional runs.
The Warriors added two runs in the third stanza for a 5-0 advantage. Lounette Jackson walked and moved to second on a groundout by Rachel Conard. Jackson scored on a single by Erica Fitzgerald. Glantz struck out Abbie Pynch, but Chestnut and Chynna Sandhart hit back-to-back singles to drive home Fitzgerald.
A pair of home runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning produced three more runs for Corban. Conrad recorded the first two RBIs with a blast to right field. Fitzgerald added a solo homer to left center.
Chestnut finished the game 2 for 2 with a walk and a run scored for the Warriors. Fitzgerald went 2 for 3, scored two runs and earned two RBIs.
Willamette will return to action with a Northwest Conference doubleheader against George Fox University on Saturday, Feb. 25.
Due to wet grounds at GFU's home field in Newberg, Ore., the games will be played at Hood View Park in Happy Valley, Ore. The first game is set for 12 p.m. (PST). WU and GFU will conclude their series with another doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Hood View Park, starting at 12 p.m.
