Dinsmore Wins 100 and 200 to Lead Bearcats at Willamette Opener

WU Achieves Victories in Seven Women's Events, Four Men's Events

SALEM, ORE. -- Jaela Dinsmore (Sr., Hines, OR/Burns HS) of Willamette University won the women's 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash to lead a strong performance by the Bearcat track and field teams at the Willamette Opener on Saturday, March 3. The Bearcats took first place in seven women's events and four men's events. The meet began WU's 2012 track and field season.

Also competing at the Willamette Opener were Whitworth University, Western Oregon University and New Hope Christian College, plus the University of Oregon Running Club.

Dinsmore took finished first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.49 seconds. She won the 200-meter dash in 25.67 seconds as she beat the field by one full second.

In addition to Dinsmore, five other athletes won events for the Bearcat women's team.

Erynn Rebol (Jr., Cottonwood, CA/Red Bluff Union HS) took first place in the 800-meter run at 2:21.08. She won the race by 2.81 seconds over Laura Copenhagen from Western Oregon, who finished second at 2:23.89.

Michaela Freeby (Fr., Milwaukie, OR/Rex Putnam HS) won the 5,000-meter run at 18:24.64, while Sally Venable (Sr., Ventura, CA/Foothill Technology HS) of Willamette was second at 18;36.39 and Kaitlin Greene (Sr., Pullman, Wa/Pullman HS) was third in 18:39.35.

Brandi Miller (Sr., Grants Pass, OR/North Valley HS) provided Willamette with first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.78. She crossed the finish line 2.27 seconds berfore Ali Mosher of WOU, who was second in 1:08.05.

Katie Mariman (So., Sherwood, OR/Sherwood HS) was first in the pole vault by clearing 10'8". Elisa Ahern (Fr., Lake Forest Park, WA/Shorecrest HS) won the triple jump with a distance of 35'3.75".

Winners for the Willamette men's team were Paul Winger (Sr., Bonney Lake, WA/Bonney Lake HS) in the 400-meter dash, Kit Kingstad (So., Beaverton, OR/Beaverton HS) in the 1,500-meter run, Spencer Clemmer (Sr., Sacramento, CA/Elk Grove HS) in the pole vault and Ray White (Sr., Corona, CA/Centennial HS) in the triple jump.

Winger claimed the win in the 400 by edging out Landon Burningham of Western Oregon. Winger was timed at 49.04 seconds, while Burningham took second at 49.18 seconds. Josh Moore of WOU was third at 49.91 seconds.

Kingstad (So., Beaverton, OR/Beaverton HS) led a 1-2 finish for the Bearcats in the 1,500-meter run. His winning time was 3:55.86. Leo Castillo (Sr., Parkdale, OR/Hood River Valley HS) earned second place in 3:57.27. Willamette runners also garnered fourth place and fifth place in the event.

Clemmer (Sr., Sacramento, CA/Elk Grove HS) attained first place the pole vault with a successful attempt at 14'1.25". Conor Foley (Sr., Somers, MT/Flathead HS) of Willamette tied for second place with Joseph Green of Whitworth at 13'1.50". White (Sr., Corona, CA/Centennial HS) achieved the top distance in the triple jump with a distance of 44'7.50".

Other top results for Willamette:

Miller was third and Ahern was fourth in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Miller earned a time of 15.76 seconds and Ahern clocked in at 15.99 seconds.

Taylor Ottomano (So., Poulsbo, WA/North Kitsap HS) placed third in the women's high jump at 4'11". She cleared the bar on her first attempt at 4'11", allowing her to place in front of four other athletes who were successful at the same height. Ottomano also took third in the long jump at 14'8".

Samantha Nhim (Sr., Tigard, OR/Southridge HS) was third in the women's 400-meter dash. She was timed at 1:00.33, just 0.21 out of second place and 0.83 behind the leader, Meryl Butcher of WOU (59.50 seconds).

Josselyn Wright (Fr., Aumsville, OR/Cascade HS) finished third in the women's discus with a top distance of 110'7", while Taryn Greenberg (Fr., Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar HS) was third in the women's hammer throw at 118'11".

Neal Howard (Sr., Seattle, WA/Ballard HS) took third place in a close finish in the men's 100-meter dash. Trent Alsin of Whitworth won the race in 11.15 seconds, with Bobby Alexander of Western Oregon in second at 11.18 seconds. Howard was next in 11.25 seconds.

In the men's 5,000-meter run, Ben Donovan (Sr., Minneapolis, MN/South HS) was third in 15:38.81 and Josh Echols (So., Olympia, WA/Capital HS) was fourth at 15:41.26.

Julio Silva (Fr., Medford, OR/St. Mary's HS) earned second place in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:07.28.

WU placed third in the men's 4 x 100-meter relay with a competitive race that ended with just 1.27 seconds between first and fourth. Whitworth won the event in 42.93 seconds, barely in front of Western Oregon at 42.94 seconds. Willamette reached the finish in 43.87 seconds.

Max Faulhaber (So., Eugene, OR/Sheldon HS) was third in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 168'9". Wyatt Briggs (Jr., Scio. OR/Scio HS) placed fourth in three throwing events, as he competed in the shot put (39'7.75"), the discus throw (138'3" and the hammer throw (150'5").
