Faulhaber Wins Hammer Throw on First Day of Lane Preview

EUGENE, ORE. -- Max Faulhaber (So., Eugene, OR/Sheldon HS) of Willamette University won the men's hammer throw on the first day of the Lane Preview, hosted by Lane Community College on Friday, March 9. The hammer throw and pole vault were completed on Friday, along with the first four events in the heptathlon and the first five events in the decathlon.

Faulhaber won the hammer throw with a distance of 157' 9". He led a 1-2 finish for the Bearcats, with Wyatt Briggs (Jr., Scio, OR/Scio HS) finishing second at 144' 5".

Brandi Miller (Sr., Grants Pass, OR/North Valley HS) from Willamette won the heptathlon 200-meter dash in 27.40 seconds, while Ginny Hodges (Jr., San Francisco, CA/Saint Ignatius College Prep) won the heptathlon high jump at 5' 1.25".

Carson Kennedy (Fr., Forest Grove, OR/Forest Grove HS) placed first in the decathlon long jump for the Bearcats with a distance of 21' 1.25".

Miller held second placed overall in the heptathlon with 2,337 points. Shay Applegate of Lane CC was the leader with 2,470 points. Applegate registered the day's top event score with 847 points in the 100-meter hurdles with a winning time of 14.96 seconds.

Kristina Hossley of Southwestern Oregon Community College was third at 2,285 and Hodges was fourth at 2,237. Bekah Daniel (So., Silverdale, WA/Central Kitsap HS) from Willamette held fifth place at 2,218. A total of 12 athletes competed in the heptathlon.

Kennedy ranked second in the decathlon at the midway point with 3,157 points. In addition winning the long jump, he earned second place finishes in the 100-meter dash in 11.66 seconds and the high jump at 5' 11.25". He placed third in the shot put at 31' 4.75".

The leader of the decathlon was Thomas Cranor, competing unattached, who scored 3,237 points. Cranor won the 100-meter dash in 11.4 seconds, took first place in the high jump at 6' 0.50" and placed first in the shot put at 35' 4". Following Kennedy in the overall standings was Ryan Rosenau from the University of Great Falls (Mont.) with 3,057 points.

Spencer Clemmer (Sr., Sacramento, CA/Elk Grove HS) of WU was in fifth place in the decathlon at 2,844 points. Clemmer took second place in the long jump with a leap of 20' 7".

The final three events in the heptathlon and the final five events in the decathlon will be held on Saturday, March 10.

In the women's pole vault, Katie Mariman (So., Sherwood, OR/Sherwood HS) from Willamette tied for second place with Liz Valentine from the University of Great Falls. Mariman and Valentine each cleared 10' 0". The winner of the event was Tara Carlton from Lane CC, who topped 10' 6".

Kelsey Engstrom (Fr., Clinton, WA/South Whidbey HS) earned third place for the Bearcats in the women's hammer throw. She recorded a toss of 108' 3". Sarah McCarthy (So., Davis, CA/Davis HS) of WU took fourth place at 100' 11" and Taryn Greenberg (Fr., Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar HS), also from WU, placed fifth at 100' 9". Kathryn Engholm, unattached, won the hammer throw at 118' 6".

Willamette's Conor Foley (Sr., Somers, MT/Flathead HS) was part of a four-way tie for third place in the men's pole vault at 13' 6". Scott Elliott, unattached, and Kevin Ellingson, unattached, took first place and second place, respectively, at 15' 0" and 14' 6".

All of the remaining events at the Lane Preview will take place on Saturday.
