St. Edward's of NCAA Division II Defeats Willamette, 9-0, in Texas
Bearcats Open Spring Break Trip against #33-ranked Hilltoppers
AUSTIN, TEXAS -- St. Edward's University, ranked #33 in the nation in NCAA Division II, defeated Willamette University from NCAA Division III, 9-0, on Monday, March 26 at the Stohmeyer Varsity Tennis Courts. The Hilltoppers improved to 9-6 on the season, while Willamette fell to 5-5.
In addition to being nationally ranked, the Hilltoppers are ranked #7 in the South Central Region of Division II. Willamette is ranked #13 in the West Region of Division III.
Audrey Tompkins and Alexandra Khadzhyan of SEU won #1 doubles over Willamette's team of Shannon Palmer (Sr., Salem, OR/Sprague HS) and Sabrina Gutierrez (So., Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park HS), 8-2. At #2 doubles, Paige Rachel and Rafaela Haegele downed Emily Bee (Sr., Portland, OR/Lincoln HS) and Denise Poltavski (Fr., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) of WU, 8-2.
The #3 doubles match was won by the SEU team of Mary Bain and Francesca Chahor against Emily Funabiki (So.. Pullman, WA/Pullman HS) and Elise Derby (Fr., Oakdale, Ca/Oakdale HS), 8-0.
St. Edward's has two players ranked in the Top 20 of the Central Region in singles. Both of the ranked players recorded wins against Willamette. Khadzhyan, who is ranked #16 in the region, defeated Palmer in #1 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Paige Rachel, ranked #17, moved past Poltavski, 6-1, 6-2.
Willamette will continue its Spring Break trip to Texas with a match against Trinity University in San Antonio on Tuesday, March 27. Match time is set for 3 p.m. (CDT)/1 p.m. (PDT).
