SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University has been declared the winner of the Bearcats' game at Southwestern University (Texas) on Sept. 1 after WU's protest of the game was granted. Willamette scored in the first overtime at 97:29, but the game continued and Southwestern tied the score late in the second overtime for a 2-2 tie.

The NCAA Men's and Women's Soccer Secretary - Rules Editor determined that the game should have ended when Erik Kaufman (Sr., F, Portland, OR/Grant HS) scored the overtime goal for Willamette, giving the Bearcats a 2-1 win. NCAA overtime periods are sudden-victory, with the first goal in overtime ending the game.

Kaufman also scored the opening goal of the game against Southwestern, giving the Bearcats a 1-0 lead just 6:20 into the first half. Southwestern tied the score at 1-1 on a penalty kick goal by Ryan Staten at 81:09.

Willamette, now 1-2 on the season, will host Northwest University (Wash.) on Saturday, Sept. 8. Game time at Sparks Field is set for 6 p.m. (PDT).
