Calder Registers Four Saves as Willamette Ties Whitman, 0-0
WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- Willamette University goalkeeper Brayden Calder (Fr., Philomath, OR/Philomath HS) achieved four saves to help the Bearcats tie Whitman College, 0-0 in two overtimes, on Saturday, Sept. 15. Calder's efforts preserved the tie despite Whitman gaining a 12-7 edge in total shots, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The Bearcats advanced their record to 3-2-1 on the season. Whitman moved to 2-3-2 overall. Both teams were opening Northwest Conference play.
Whitman outshot Willamette 9-4 in regulation, but Calder and the Bearcat defense prevented the Missionaries from scoring and the game moved into the first of two 10-minute overtime periods.
Willamette achieved a 2-1 edge in shots during the first overtime, while Whitman attained a 2-1 margin during the second overtime.
In the first extra session, Trevor Jensen (Jr., MF, Chula Vista, CA/Bonita Vista HS) at 91:36 and Mike McGrew (Sr., MF, Portland, OR/Grant HS) at 95:08 each created a shot for Willamette. In between, Riley Paul of Whitman sent a shot on frame at 92:52, but the attempt was saved by Calder.
Just under one minute into the second overtime at 100:57, Calder was called on to make another save, as Dhavan Vengadasalam sent a shot on goal. Willamette responded with a shot by Erik Kaufman (Sr., F, Portland, OR/Grant HS) at 101.22 that went wide. Leland Matthaeus had the final shot for the Missionaries at 107:54, but the ball went high.
Willamette built a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, including a 2-0 margin during the overtime sessions. The Bearcats also were called for more fouls than the Missionaries, as WU finished with 21 fouls, compared to nine fouls for Whitman.
Calder and Whitman goalkeeper Michael Bathurst each recorded a shutout. Bathurst made just one save -- his stop on a shot by Austin Jacobson (Fr., MF, Salem, OR/South Salem HS) at 37:13 in the first half.
The Bearcats will conclude their two-game, weekend road trip on Sunday, Sept. 16 against Whitworth University. Game time in Spokane, Wash., is set for 2:30 p.m. (PDT).
