Smith is Tied for Third Place after First Day of GFU Culturame Classic
Bearcats are Third among Eight Teams after 18 Holes
ALOHA, ORE. -- Willamette University sophomore golfer Nicole Smith (Portland, OR/Westview HS) is one of five golfers tied for third place after the first day of the George Fox University Culturame Classic on Saturday, Oct. 6 at The Reserve Vineyards Golf Club. In addition, Willamette is in third place in the team standings heading into the final round on Sunday.
Kelsey Morrison of George Fox led the individual standings with a score of 75. Kiana Lumanlan, also from GFU, was in second place with a 79.
Smith, along with four other golfers, carded an 80 to claim part of a tie for third place. Also tied for third were Loreece Magsanide of George Fox, Ravipa Losakul and Emily Stevens from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Sarah Crofchek from Northwest Christian University (Ore.).
George Fox topped the team standings after earning a combined score of 315. UC-Santa Cruz was 12 stokes back in second place at 327, with Willamette in third at 336.
Linfield College was fourth at 361, Whitworth University held fifth place at 364 and Northwest Christian was sixth at 367. Simpson University (Calif.) followed in seventh place at 386 and Pacific University was eighth at 396.
Smith was one of six golfers competing for Willamette. LettaJoe Gallup (So., Alameda, CA/Holy Names HS) and Elise Levy (Fr.) each achieved a score of 85. Mckenzie Weinhold (So., Placerville, CA/El Dorado HS/U. of Nevada-Reno) shot an 86 and Taneesh Kaur Sra (Fr.) earned an 87. Mele Ana Kastner (So., Vancouver, WA/Columbia River HS) carded a 93.
Kastner is competing as an individual because each team is limited to a maximum of five scoring players. The lowest four scores each day count toward the team score.
The GFU Culturame Classic will conclude with the final 18 holes on Sunday, Oct. 7.
