Hall of Fame Focus: 1974-75 Men's Basketball Team
SALEM, ORE. -- Each day between Oct. 10 and the Willamette University Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 19, the Hall of Fame Focus will highlight one of the individuals or teams being inducted. The 1974-75 Willamette men's basketball team is featured today.
A total of five former Bearcat student-athletes, plus two teams, a former coach and one individual selected for meritorious service will be inducted into the WU Athletic Hall of Fame this fall.
The induction ceremony will be held at the Salem Convention Center. A social hour will start at 6 p.m. (PDT), with the banquet and induction ceremony starting at 7 p.m.
1974-75 Men's Basketball Team
Record: 24-5 Overall, 11-3 NWC (2nd Place)
Reached NAIA National Tournament

The 1974-75 Willamette men’s basketball team achieved a 24-5 record and earned a bid to the 1975 NAIA National Tournament. The Bearcats were 11-3 in the Northwest Conference and set a school record by shooting 71.3% on free throws during the season.
Head Coach Jim Boutin led the Bearcats to a 15-1 record at home in the first season at Cone Field House and was named Northwest Small College Coach of the Year. The Bearcats upset #2-seeded Lewis & Clark and then defeated #1-seeded Oregon Tech to win the NAIA District 2 Tournament.
Post player Mike Cashman was selected NAIA All-America and was Honorable Mention All-Coast for all divisions of play.
The team scored 114 points against Humboldt State on Dec. 27, 1974 and earned 66 rebounds versus Simon Fraser on Feb. 10, 1972. For the season, Willamette averaged 79.7 points per game while allowing 73.9.
