Emily Compton Honored as NWC Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week
Senior Setter Earns 105 Assists in Pair of Bearcat Wins
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University senior setter Emily Compton (Portola, CA/Portola HS/Boise State Univ.) has been selected as the Northwest Conference Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Week for her efforts in Willamette's wins over #18 University of Puget Sound and George Fox University on Nov. 8 and 9, 2013.
Compton tallied 42 assists and four service aces in Willamette's stunning 25-12, 25-15, 25-20 upset of UPS on Friday, Nov. 8. In the first set, she recorded three aces in a row to help the Bearcats build a 12-1 lead.
On Saturday, Compton achieved a career-high 63 assists as Willamette rallied from a 2-1 deficit to claim a 3-2 victory over George Fox.
In the crucial fourth set of the match, Compton served on eight consecutive Bearcat points. She recorded three service aces during the run, as Willamette earned a 25-16, 23-25, 19-25, 25-10, 15-10 victory over the Bruins to clinch fourth place in the NWC.
All told, Compton earned 105 assists over the weekend, averaging 13.1 assists per set. She achieved seven service aces (0.88 per set) and 14 digs (1.75 per set).
Compton finished the 2013 season with a career-high 974 assists while averaging 9.84 assists per set. She started all 25 matches and played in all 99 sets. She led the Bearcats with 32 service aces (0.32 per set) and achieved 206 digs (2.08 per set) during the season.
In four years with the Bearcats, Compton accumulated 3,187 assists for a career average of 8.95 assists per set. She also earned 773 career digs, 69 service aces and 111 total blocks. She played in 96 matches and 356 sets.
This year, Compton helped Willamette win seven of its last eight matches to finish 12-13 overall and 8-8 (4th place) in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats ended the season with a four-match winning streak.
