Renovated Fitness Center Reopens at the Sparks Center
SALEM, ORE. -- The newly renovated Willamette University Fitness Center reopened on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Opening remarks from Athletic Director David Rigsby and WU President Steve Thorsett in the lobby of the Sparks Athletic Center were followed by tours of the renovated Fitness Center.
In addition, it was the first chance for students, faculty and staff to work out on the new equipment and to tour the multi-level facility. Watch the highlight video of the reopening to get a sense of the size and scope of the renovations.
Renovations began following the conclusion of the 2012-13 academic year and continued throughout the fall semester. A temporary fitness center was set up in Cone Field House, and served its purpose well during construction. Even so, it was great to see the renovated Fitness Center being used for the first time.
Nearly all of the equipment in the renovated Fitness Center is new. A few accessories and pieces of equipment will be added soon.
The completing of the updated Fitness Center as well as the enlarging and improving the Burr Treatment Center for Athletic Training were the main components of Phase 1 of the Sparks Center renovation. Fund raising is still underway for Phase 2, which will renovate and upgrade the locker rooms on the lower level. When completed the overall project will be a $7 million renovation.
