Jepsen Named to D3baseball.com Team of the Week
Tosses 11 Scoreless Innings, Earns Two Wins
SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University baseball player Matt Jepsen (Fr., LHP, Fallbrook, CA/Fallbrook HS) has been named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week after picking up a pair of wins in his first two collegiate baseball appearances.
On Saturday, Feb. 8, Jepsen entered a game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the start of the third inning with Willamette holding a 2-1 lead. He pitched the final seven innings and struck out six batters. He allowed just two walks and only two hits -- one single and one double -- as the Bearcats gained a 5-1 victory.
He faced just 23 batters and held CMS to a .087 team batting average. In recognition for his efforts, Jepsen was selected Northwest Conference Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week.
Eight days later, Jepsen threw four scoreless inning at the end of the game, helping Willamette close out a 7-2 non-conference win over Lewis & Clark College. He allowed three hits and just one walk. Willamette improved to 4-2 on the season with the win.
This weekend, the Bearcats will participate in the NWC/Cascade/GNAC Challenge, a three-way tournament featuring teams from the NCAA Division II Greater Northwest Athletic Conference, the NAIA Cascade Collegiate Conference, and the NCAA Division III Northwest Conference.
Willamette will open NWC play on Saturday, March 1, hosting a doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran University at John Lewis Field/Roy S. "Spec" Keene Stadium. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. (PST).
