Weinhold Takes Fourth, as Willamette Ties for Second at Spring Thaw
BEND, ORE. -- Mckenzie Weinhold (Jr., Placerville, CA/El Dorado HS/Univ. of Nevada-Reno) of Willamette University put together two great rounds, shooting a 77 and a 79, to earn fourth place at the Willamette Spring Thaw in women's golf, hosted by the Bearcats at the Broken Top Club in Bend, Ore., on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13.
George Fox University won the tournament with a score of 623 (303-323). Weinhold's efforts helped Willamette tie Lewis & Clark for second at 673.
The Bearcats shot 331 in the first round and 342 in the second round. The Pioneers achieved a score of 333 in the first round and followed up with a score of 340 in the second round.
Linfield College placed fourth at 741 (360-381). Pacific University was fifth at 755 (379-376). Corban University did not enter a full team. A total of 26 golfers participated in the tournament.
Sydney Maluenda of George Fox won the individual title with a score of 147. She shot 75 int he first round and carded an even-par 72 in the second round. She won by six strokes.
Claire Burke from Lewis & Clark was second at 153 (75-58) and Madison Perry of GFU was third at 154 (72-82). Weinhold was fourth with an overall score of 156. Fifth place went to Arielle Valdez of L&C, who shot 157 (75-82).
Loreece Magsanide from GFU placed sixth for the Bruins at 159 (77-82). LettaJoe Gallup (Jr., Alameda, CA/Holy Names HS) of Willamette was seventh at 162, as she shot 80-82. Whitney Jammerman of GFU was one stroke behind Gallup in eighth at 163 (79-84).
Sophia Vigil of Lewis & Clark was ninth at 166 (80-86), while Taneesh Sra (So., Fremont, CA/Mission San Jose HS) of WU placed 10th at 168 (82-86). Also competing for the Bearcats was Elise Levy (So., Reno, NV/Bishop Manogue HS), who shot 187 (92-95).
Willamette will host a tournament for the second consecutive weekend when they take on nearby rivals Linfield and Pacific at the Willamette Cup on Saturday, April 19. The event will be played at the Oregon Golf Association Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore. Action is set to start at 10 a.m. (PDT).
