Bearcats Fall to Loggers, 4-0, in Final Game of Season

TACOMA, WASH. -- The University of Puget Sound scored four goals in the first 19 minutes on its way to a 4-0 victory over Willamette University, Saturday, Nov. 8 at Peyton Field. Puget Sound, ranked #6 in the NCAA Division III Poll, improved to 18-1 on the season and finished its NWC schedule with a perfect 16-0 record. The Loggers will advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Willamette concluded the year at 12-8 overall, 10-6 in the NWC.

Even with the loss to the nationally-ranked Loggers, Willamette still finished with 10 wins in its last 15 games. The Bearcats went 5-2 over the final seven games of the season and ended the year with 10-4 record in games decided by one goal. WU recorded seven shutout victories during the season.

Jenny Moore opened the scoring for UPS just 4:03 into the contest. She shot from 10 yards on an assist from Mikaela Freeman. The Loggers increased their lead to 2-0 when Moore assisted on a goal by Fiona Gornick at 13:09.

Melissa Abellanida tallied the final two goals for Puget Sound. She earned her first goal at 14:17, as she found the net just 1:08 after Gornick. Abellanida's second goal was at 18:57, as she scored on a header following a corner kick by Nikki Graff. Neither team scored during the rest of the game.

UPS achieved a 20-7 advantage in total shots and held Willamette without a shot on goal. The Loggers created 11 shots on goal, including four by Janece Levien.

In the first half, Puget Sound outshot Willamette 15-4 and recorded six corner kicks. During the second half, UPS took five shots and Willamette earned three shots. Puget Sound finished the game with an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

WU goalkeeper Kelli Gano (So., Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) produced seven saves. Kallie Wolfer of UPS played the first 70:27 in net and shared the shutout with Katie Wheeler.
