Tom Hibbard is in his third season as Willamette’s women’s golf coach.
Hibbard has been a part of the Willamette campus since 1973, when he began a seven-year stint as an associate professor of economics. He was elevated to professor in 1980, and served in that capacity full time until 2000. Hibbard then served as a part-time faculty member until his retirement in the spring of 2003.
Hibbard is no stranger to the game of golf, either. He was the No. 1 man for Pomona (Calif.) College for three seasons and played in the 1959 NCAA tournament at Eugene Country Club. At that time, there were no NCAA divisions in golf, so Hibbard played in the same tournament along with eventual PGA Tour players Tommy Aaron and Tom Shaw.
Since his college days, Hibbard has played in many tournaments. The left-hander has competed in the championship flights of the Oregon Amateur and Portland City Tournament. He also nearly qualified for the U.S. Amateur once, becoming the first alternate.
Hibbard is a 1959 graduate of Pomona. After graduating, he served as the Pomona men’s golf coach for three seasons. He shared the position one year with Russ Beaton, also an emeritus Willamette faculty member and former Bearcat men’s tennis coach.
Hibbard is a native Oregonian and graduated from Portland’s Grant High School in 1955. He was the No. 1 man on the Generals’ golf team one season and played No. 2 for two years.
Hibbard received a Ph.D. in economics from Claremont (Calif.) Graduate School in 1967.
