Toby Krauel is in his third year as the head coach of the men’s tennis team at Willamette University. Krauel previously was the head coach at Gonzaga University for seven years (1993-00) and was an assistant coach at the University of Portland for one year (1990-91).

In 2010, Krauel guided the Bearcats to a 13-8 dual match record, including 11-5 during the Northwest Conference regular season schedule. The Bearcats tied for third place in the NWC and were seeded #3 for the NWC Tournament. Willamette reached the finals before losing to nationally-ranked Whitman College.

Krauel led the Bearcats to a 10-9 overall dual match record in 2009, including a 9-7 mark in the NWC. The Bearcats advanced to the NWC Tournament as the #4 seed and defeated Whitworth University in the first round before falling to top-seeded Whitman College in the semifinals and to Linfield College in the third place match. It was the third consecutive season that Willamette reached the NWC Tournament semifinals.

Krauel graduated from Portland in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He also holds a law degree from the Gonzaga University School of Law (1994).

He played tennis as an undergraduate and achieved the West Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete Award in 1988-89 and 1989-90. He was Portland’s Most Inspirational Tennis Player three times.

Krauel continues to be active as a tennis player. He was ranked third in the United States for Men’s 35 Doubles in 2004 and 2005. At the same time, he was ranked 23rd in the U.S. in Men’s 35 Singles. In 2006, he ranked seventh in the nation in Men’s 35 Doubles. He was ranked #1 in the Pacific Northwest in Men’s 35 Doubles in 2005 and 2006.

In addition to participating in competitive tennis, Krauel is an active distance runner. He has completed six marathons.

As a coach at Gonzaga, he built a competitive team after taking over a program that was struggling prior to his arrival. He put together a tough schedule for the Bulldogs and served as the first tennis liaison between the West Coach Conference and the men’s tennis coaches. Coach Krauel is also a USPTA certified tennis professional at West Hills Racket and Fitness Club.

"I think that Willamette is a great opportunity to build a strong tennis program," Krauel added. "It's a solid university academically and it's located in a city that has a significant history in tennis. I'm committed to establishing a strong program."
