Established in 2007 by the Center for Ancient Studies and Archaeology, this eight-week internship is awarded every summer to Willamette University juniors, seniors, and recent graduates who have not yet entered graduate school. The internship provides students (especially those with an interest in museum careers) with a unique, hands-on introduction to the curatorial, educational, operational, and preparatory structure of a small university art museum. Interns will work on a variety of projects depending on the museum’s needs, give gallery talks, and conduct original research on a specific object(s) in the museum’s collection with the guidance of a faculty advisor. This research will culminate in a paper, a public presentation on campus during the following academic year, as well as educational materials and exhibition labels as needed by the museum.
This internship represents a full-time committment - 40/hours per week for 8 weeks. It involves working at the museum on a variety of projects as well as undertaking an independent research project with a specific outcome. Student Honorarium: $2,500. Faculty Advisor Stipend: $500.
Students interested in applying for the Internship in Museology at the HFMA must fill out the Application Form and must write a research proposal as described on the form. These materials along with a current transcript (unofficial is fine) must be submitted electronically (as .pdf files) by the specified deadline. In addition, at least two weeks prior to the deadline, applicants must alert their proposed faculty sponsor and the museum's Director or Collection Curator regarding the necessary recommendation forms to be submitted separately by these individuals in support of the application:
All application materials must be submitted by February 19, 2010.
Please submit all materials electronically (as attached .pdf files) to:

Project: Ancient Greek Coins
Ms. Saxton catalogued and researched a collection of the Greek coins from the McIntyre Collection of ancient coins that was donated to the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in 2006. Her collaborative work with Prof. Ortwin Knorr resulted in a fine on-line exhibition of selected examples. Her research also formed the basis for the first public exhibition of these coins as part of the 2009 re-installation of the Sponenburgh Gallery at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art.
