The Willamette University Center for Sustainable Communities is pleased to support and encourage rigorous scholarship and teaching that enhances both our understanding of sustainability and its practice within our communities. In doing so, we affirm our vision of a Center for Sustainable Communities that advances academic excellence while focusing the University’s expertise on the fundamental dilemma of our generation—creating sustainable and resilient ecological and social communities which balance the needs and wants of present generations with those of the generations which follow.
In line with the University’s commitment to a robust and interdisciplinary conception of sustainability that embraces President Pelton’s “Four E’s of Sustainability”—Equity, Environment, Economy, and Education, the Center seeks to encourage and support sustainability research and teaching across the disciplines and colleges—from Art and Anthropology to Marketing, Law, Science, and Theater. All grants and awards are offered on a competitive basis.
1. Fred Wert Collaborative Research in Sustainability Grant
The Center for Sustainable Communities is pleased to announce the A. Fred Wert Collaborative Research in Sustainability Grant competition. The Wert Grant provides a total of $4000 ($3000 student, $1000 faculty) for a collaborative research project in sustainability combining student research with faculty collaboration. Students may choose to work in collaboration with a faculty member on an aspect of that faculty member’s existing research in sustainability, or design their own sustainability project in collaboration with a faculty member with the requisite expertise. In each case, it is expected that student and faculty member work closely in designing a collaborative project that enhances the student’s scholarly development and research expertise, and contributes meaningfully to our academic understanding of sustainability as well as its practice. It is also expected that collaboration leads to presentation and/or publication of the research results beyond the Willamette community.
