This conference will bring together the many stake holders in Northwest Forests.It will include both reflective and critical dialogue regarding the success and future of sustainable forestry and ecosystem management. The topic is timely, following almost ten years of on-the-ground practice in sustainable and ecosystem management, as well as the recent legal, political, and judicial changes since the 2000 elections.

Panelists and attendees will include state and federal government agencies, researchers, scientists, activists, non-governmental organizations, loggers, foresters, students, politicians, policy makers, watershed councils, and interested citizens. The conference will occur in conjunction with the 2002 Dempsey Lecture in Environmental Science, given by former Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt.

PANEL

The Future 
and Challenges 
of the Northwest Forest Plan

Babbitt

Rey

Former Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt and Mark Rey, the Under Secretary of Natural Resources and Environment for the USDA, along with Jack Ward Thomas, Former Head of the U.S. Forest Service, will participate in the closing panel titled The Future Challenges of the Northwest Forest Plan. Babbitt led the Department of the Interior during the Clinton Administration, shaping the Northwest Forest Plan which was enacted by the President in 1993. Mark Rey was directly involved in 
many of the forestry and conservation legislation considered during the past several sessions of Congress. 

Following the conference at 8 p.m., Secretary Babbitt will also present the 2002 Dempsey Lecture in Environmental Science. The lecture is free and open to the public.
