Background Information

What Does This Indicator Mean?
Adequate prenatal care is defined as five or more prenatal visits beginning prior to the third trimester of pregnancy.  This indicator is calculated as the number of babies whose mothers received adequate care divided by the total births minus the births for which data is missing, multiplied by 100 to obtain the percentage.

Other Risk Factors or Indicators to Consider
Early, high quality prenatal care is critical to improving pregnancy outcomes. Inadequate prenatal care can be directly associated with increased incidence of low birth weight babies and infant mortality.

In addition to prenatal care, factors such as infant mortality rates, the percentage of healthy birth weight babies, and the percentage of families without health insurance should be considered when analyzing the health of newborns and their mothers, as well as the impact on the community. Adequate prenatal care can also be used when evaluating access to health care by Oregon families.

Limitations of the Data
When there are fewer than ten births in each zip code in a particular year, that zip code is not reported here to ensure confidentiality.
