FACULTY STUDY TIME PROGRAM POLICIES
- Purpose and Goal: This program provides individual faculty members with time to complete a major, long-term scholarly or creative project intended for peer review in the form of publication, public performance, or exhibition. The project should be one that could not otherwise be completed while carrying out normal teaching duties. The project should contribute to the applicant’s teaching effectiveness, professional growth, and intellectual enrichment. Faculty members participating in the program agree to submit a result of their Study Time project for peer review in the form of publication, public performance, or exhibition.
- Members of the Faculty Resource Committee have suggested the following examples of appropriate projects:
- Complete a book
- Complete a review article for a professional journal
- Complete an exhibition (one-person or group)
- Prepare and present a solo or chamber recital
- Compose and/or score a substantial musical composition
- Complete a major work or body of artistic work under commission to an external agency
- Research, write, and submit an article for publication
- Compile a curriculum guide for publication
- Develop software for publication
- Prepare a laboratory manual for publication
- Eligibility: Full-time, tenure-track faculty with two or more years of full-time teaching at Willamette University may participate in the program. Members of the Faculty Council or the Faculty Study Time program review committee (currently the Faculty Resource Committee) may apply, but they may not participate in the selection of Study Time award recipients. Faculty members must complete two semesters of full-time teaching after a sabbatical leave before becoming eligible for this Faculty Study Time program. No Study Time requests will be granted two semesters before a Sabbatical Leave.
- Application Procedures: Application forms are available online. Completed forms with an updated curriculum vitae are due to the Faculty Resource Committee, Applicants should clearly indicate how the proposed project meets the purposes and goals of the Study Time program stated above. The Faculty Resource Committee will evaluate applications and recommend the strongest proposals to the Faculty Council for award.
- Release Time: Successful applicants will have their normal teaching responsibility reduced by two-thirds time for one semester. The precise nature of the release time will vary by discipline; thus applicants and department chairs should work together to develop appropriate release time arrangements. The semester during which the faculty member has a Study Time teaching load reduction will count as a full-time semester for the purposes of accruing time for the next sabbatical leave.
Reporting Procedures: Study time award recipients will submit a one page final report to the Faculty Council in the September following the leave with a copy or illustration of the finished scholarly project (the title page of a publication is adequate). Recipients are also required to present a seminar, talk, exhibition, performance, or other appropriate display of their Study Time activities to which the University Community is invited. In the event the project is not completed, the recipient will submit a progress report to the Faculty Council each September until the project is completed.
