Featured Student . . .

A freshman at West Salem High School, Anaisa has an inspirational outlook on life, one that she partly attributes to her involvement at Willamette Academy. Here, she says, “Everyone is unique at something and [being] different is cool!” Anaisa has embraced WA and everything it has to offer with open arms. “It is a dream come true!” she describes, and truly considers her peers and mentors here at WA a second family. Her compassion and tolerance make her a great friend and caring daughter.

Her favorite aspect of WA is the summer camps. Her first summer, she was very nervous but definitely grew during the experience. Now she can’t wait to go back, especially for the opportunity to become closer with students of different years and high schools than her own.

Anaisa has also excelled in high school. She played flute in the marching band this past year and was on the soccer team. She is a member of the Keystone Club, the Community Service Club, and the Smart Moves Club, where students learn about forming healthy habits like exercising, communicating well with family members, and cooking healthy food. That has been especially fun for Anaisa, who loves cooking. Also an excellent artist, her work decorates the WA office for the enjoyment of all.

Though she is only just beginning the great adventure of high school, Anaisa has big dreams for her future. A person who really loves learning, she can’t pick a favorite subject—Anaisa likes everything from math and science to social studies, English, and French. After high school graduation, she wants to become a pediatrician and is considering attending the University of Oregon or a college in New Jersey followed by medical school.

Welcome

Willamette Academy at Willamette University is a college access program committed to empowering youth who have the desire and potential to advance to higher education, targeting those who are historically under-represented at colleges and universities in the United States. Willamette Academy is a supplemental education program in which ethnically diverse students are challenged and inspired to enhance their critical thinking skills, see themselves as leaders in their community, and develop a love of learning. Our hope is that through cooperative efforts with families and public schools, Willamette Academy students will develop a stronger foundation on which to build their future.
