Willamette Academy is a five-year supplemental education/college access program (8th grade through 12th grade) for underrepresented college-bound students in the Salem/Keizer school district. Students are nominated by their middle school teachers at the end of the seventh grade. Each year, the Academy selects approximately 25 seventh-grade students from approximately 120 applicants.

The program is designed to address the factors that bar talented students from attending college. We understand that what happens in the classroom is only a very small aspect affecting our students’ success. To that end we offer daily study hall sessions, Academic Mentors, study skills and academic classes to support our students in the achievement of this goal. We also strive to create a strong relationship with our students’ teachers and schools in the Salem/Keizer school district.

For our students to be truly successful we need Willamette University students willing to devote their time, attention, academic expertise, and experience with our students.

Academic Mentor (Tutor)

Willamette Academy is seeking conscientious, dedicated, and responsible Willamette University students to act as Academic Mentors for our students. As an Academic Mentor you will provide tutoring, serve as a role model, and support learning activities during academic sessions, group activities, and informal time with Willamette Academy students.

Are you an aspiring teacher? Are you going to apply to a MAT program at Willamette or other institution?

Required for admittance to the MAT program at Willamette University (& most other MAT programs at other institutions):

Two letters of recommendation from persons who have supervised the applicant while working with school age children or youth are required for admission to the program. It is essential that all applicants obtain and show evidence of some experience, either volunteer or paid, with youth of an appropriate age before applying to this program.

Acting as an Academic Mentor fulfills this requirement.
