Grants are open to students who will be returning to Willamette: rising sophomores, juniors and seniors. Grants to support student learning through hands-on work with creative production or scholarly study of cultural products such as archives, historical collections. Most will be 8-week intensive summer experiences on campus though off-campus experiences are possible with a reflection project to be completed upon return. Funds student summer stipend of $4500. Housing is not provided in addition to the stipend.

Requires commitment to full time work on the project for the grant period, participation in gatherings in the summer and participation in public presentation on campus in Fall and/or Spring presentations subsequent to summer project.

Past summer projects have included animated shorts, podcast, dance, documentary filmmaking, journalistic writing, music production, photography, poetry chapbooks, short story collections.

Funds individual or collaborative group projects such as:

  • creative production for those with experience in creative production and mentorship from either 1) a faculty member experienced in that form of cultural production or 2) a faculty member with expertise in the conceptual area of focus of the project.
  • creative production for those without experience in creative production who propose to gain that experience as part of the grant project. Such projects must have mentorship from humanities or arts faculty with expertise in the conceptual area of focus of the project.

    Funds for example projects in:
    • creative writing
    • music production
    • fine art production
    • theatrical production 
    • multimedia production
    • popular media production – podcasts, vlogs etc.
    • summer internship/assistantship work with cultural products, such as in an archive, museum, artist's studio or popular cultural production studio. Student(s) must have a Willamette faculty mentor who will remain connected with the student(s) during the summer experience and will mentor production of a creative or scholarly reflection on the summer experience while away and/or upon return.
