This course provides a broad survey of political history and social change in China from the fall of the imperial order to the “market socialism” of today. Topics include: state and society in late imperial China; the turmoil of civil war and Japanese invasion; the rise of Chairman Mao and the Chinese Communist Party; the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution disasters; the economics reform of Deng, Xiaoping; and the political crisis posed by student pro-democracy demonstrators in 1989.
