This course provides an overview of the main social, cultural, and political developments that shaped French civilization from prehistoric times to the beginning of the 5th Republic. Focus will be placed on the emergence of feudal regimes and the development of an increasingly absolute monarchy supported by the Church. We will then examine the legacy of the revolution of 1789 and the building of a secular nation. Readings include literature, art, and historical documents. Conducted in French.
