Advanced Chinese: Reading the Media

Course Description

This class continues to help you develop proficient language skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translating. In addition, interpreting and analyzing text from cultural studies and media studies perspectives are strongly emphasized. Comparative analysis of translations will be integrated in the interpretation of text. Rapid vocabulary expansion, correct use of grammar points, proficient use of the language in spoken and written forms, critical views in understanding the content and means of media, and cultural analysis of the text are the major goals. MOI: IT. Prerequisites: CHNSE 232 or equivalent.

This course will follow the chosen textbook. Various language reinforcement drills will be conducted. In addition, audio-visual materials will be used. Students will also use Internet, satellite TV, and other media forms to collect, compare, and analyze news reports from different backgrounds. By doing so, the students not only learn the language and the content of the reports, but also learn some theories and methods in the studies of communication, media, and culture.
