Answer
Key to the Exercises GVE p. 251
When Publius Casetius and Publius Tadius were prefects, it was
reported to Verres that a certain ship of pirates had been captured;
this ship (it was said) was full of the most beautiful young men,
silver, and clothes. Verres ordered the ship to be brought to Syracuse
by the sailors. Then the death penalty was expected by everyone.
But although the old men were killed at once, the beautiful young
men were [nevertheless] lead away by him and given to (his) friends.
No one believed that the pirates would be freed. Nevertheless, this
was done by Verres.
Later, however, a much more wicked deed was committed by this (despicable)
man. For Verres began to substitute Roman citizen, who had earlier
been thrown into prison, in place of the pirates who had been freed.
Although these (Romans) were (repeatedly) recognized by many people,
they still were executed with the axe.
