Professor McGaughy earned an A.B. from Ohio Wesleyan University,
a B.D. from Drew Theological Seminary, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from
Vanderbilt University. He is also an ordained United Methodist minister.
Lane McGaughy's interests in Classical Studies include Greek grammar
and linguistics, Herodotus, and ancient biography. He is the author
of two books on Hellenistic Greek grammar and numerous scholarly
articles in academic journals and anthologies.
Prof. McGaughy has served as President and Executive Secretary both
of the Pacific Northwest Region of the American Academy of Religion
and the Society of Biblical Literature. Together with his mentor,
Robert Funk, he helped establish the Religious Studies Department
at the University of Montana, where he became one of the original
co-founders and editors of Scholars Press. Later, he and Bob Funk
went on to found the Westar
Institute and the associated Polebridge
Press.
Professor McGaughy came to Salem in 1981as the first holder of the
George H. Atkinson Chair
of Religious and Ethical Studies. He became a driving
force in the establishment of Willamette University's Classical
Studies Program (founded in 1998) and chaired it for many years.
In addition, he was instrumental in the founding of the Salem
Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America (chartered
in 1995) and the Northwest House of Theological
Studies. His exemplary teaching at Willamette was recognized
with the United Methodist Distinguished Teaching Award.
Professor McGaughy retired from Willamette University after 25 years
of service in May 2007. He has agreed to serve as Director of the
newly established Center of Ancient Studies and Archaeology
(CASA) at Willamette University. In addition, he will continue to
