Chance in the News
Quantitative and statistical claims are constantly reported in the news. For example, one reads that the Affordable Care Act has led to a dramatic decline in the percentage of uninsured Americans, childhood obesity rates are declining (or increasing), and acceptance rates at elite colleges are at record lows. In this course, we will learn to be critical readers of these claims. With only elementary quantitative/statistical tools, we will investigate the evidence and assumptions behind these claims. No prior coursework in statistics is required. Readings for the course will be primarily news articles from current newspapers and journals.
