Philomathean Society

The Willamette University Philomathean Society, established in 1856, is the oldest debating society in the Western United States. The Philomathean Society includes some of the university's best and brightest students--students who maintain high grades while being active in forensics and other extracurricular activities.

Constitution

Name

The organiation shall be called the "Philomathean Society."

Purpose

Noting the value of dialogue in the process of liberal arts education, the Philomathean Society aims to benefit members of the Willamette University community by sponsoring a series of public debates and other such opportunities for intellectual enlightenment.

Membership

All voting members and officers of the Philomathean Society must be registered students, current or former faculty, or alumni of Willamette University.

The Philomathean Society shall not deny consideration for membership because of sex, race, religion, creed, national origin, mental or physical handicap, age, sexual orientation, or veteran status.

Officers

The officers of the Philomathean Society shall be President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Advisor.

The President, Secretary, and Treasurer shall each be a member elected by vote of the membership prior to the end of each school year to serve a term of office lasting for the entire following school year. Any vacancies will be filled for the remainder of the current school year by a member chosen in an immediate vote of the membership.

The President will maintain a current roster of the Society's membership, call and conduct meetings of the Society, and carry out the business of the membership either directly or through the appointment of committees.

The Secretary will take and keep written minutes of membership meetings report the minutes of a given meeting at the following meeting.

The Treasurer will oversee the finances of the Society and will deliver a report to the membership at each meeting.

The Advisor will be a Willamette University faculty member chosen by vote of the membership.

Meetings

The Society will meet upon the call of the President or Advisor. Business may be conducted by majority vote of those in attendance.

Amendments to the Constitution

Amendments to the constitution must be approved by a 2/3 vote of the membership.

Parliamentary Authority

The parliamentary authority of the organization will be Roberts Rules of Order.
