Teaching poetry is a creative art. Teachers and students, stirred by the language of a piece of great literature, rise to meet one another imaginatively in an exploration of the nature of being fully human. The teacher encourages the richest environment possible for students to explore. Each, in turn, finds his/her own way through the ripples and currents of literary tradition, self-reflexively seeking the resonances of her/his own time and place in an individual quest for discovery of an authentic, creative critical voice.
