This year's Raymond Kenitzer Sr Exercise Science Scholar Award was presented to Sarah Frances Butler at the Academic Awards Ceremony. This is awared to one Exercise Science major each year in recognition of academic excellence and outstanding contributions to advancing the ideals of the Department of Exercise. 4/07.
Intructor Presents at Harvard University
Nutrition instructor Elizabeth Somer presented two sold-out lectures at Harvard University on April 27, 2007. Ms. Somer spoke to faculty, staff, and students on two of her books. One presentation was "Habits That Mess Up Your Diet" and the other was "Food & Mood: How What You Eat Affects How You Feel, Think, Sleep, and Handle Stress".
Professor Inducted into Hall of Fame
Professor Russ Cagle was honored for his achievements by being inducted into Oregon Athletic Trainers Society Hall of Fame Inaugural Class of 2007. Ceremonies were held during the annual OATS business meeting March 23, 2007 at the Hilton in Vancouver Washington.

Seven Exercise Science majors presented their work on 3/22/07. ExSci classes were cancelled for the day to give other ExSci students the opportunity to attend the presentations.
Professors Receive Grant
Professors Peter Harmer and Stasinos Stavrianeas, in conjuction with WU Law professors James Nafziger and Dean Richardson, received a 2007-08 Hewlett Grant for their proposal to develop a team-taught Interdisciplinary Studies class comprised of students from the College of Law and the College of Liberal Arts entitled Game Plan: Exemplars to investigate the intricate interrelationships between sport, law and social values. President Lee Pelton announced the awards 3/18/07.

Professor Julianne Abendroth-Smith's research on use on trekking poles in downhill hiking was mentioned in a Los Angeles Times article by Janet Cromley, Times staff writer, 2/12/07.
ExSci Senior to Present at National Event
Dan Yaeger (ExSci '07) and Rachel White (Biology '07) were chosen to present at the 54th American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisanna, May 30 - June 2, 2007. Over 5,000 participants were expected at this year's meeting. There are lectures, symposia, presentations, and an exhibition hall. Students could also meet with employers about possilbe career opportunities. Mr. Yaeger presented his study "Determination of maximal lactate steady state: convenience over accuracy?"
ACSM Northwest Annual Conference
"Exploring the Frontiers of Health and Fitness" was the theme of the February 2007 conference, held in Seattle Washington. Rachael White (Biology '07) was one of only two undergraduates selected to present her research at the conference. Dan Yaeger (ExSci '07) was one of four undergraduates selected for the poster session. Rachel and Daniel conducted research under the supervision of Professor Stasinos Stavrianeas during the summer and fall of 2006, as part of the Summer Collaborative Research Program. In addition to the student work, Professor Stavrianeas and Professor Janeba (Department of Mathematics) also presented their research work. Of the 20 four-year universities at the conference, Willamette students accounted for one third of the posters and presentations. Exercise Science Professor Stasinos Stavrianeas, and Al Stephenson of the Department of Athletics published "Lactate Testing Revisited: A Reliable Indicator of Training Progress for All Swimmers." It appeared in the International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education, 2007, 1, 65-72, Human Kinetics, inc. Abstract.

Nutrition instructor Elizabeth Somer has made several television appearances this year. Ms. Somer appeared on "The Today Show" on 4/30/07 to discuss "Not-so-healthy health foods"; 3/8/07 to discuss Vitamin D: the hot new vitamin; was interviewed by Al Roker on 11/9/06 [video link] as well as promoting her newest book "Age-Proof Your Body" [McGraw-Hill Sept 2006]; discussed overweight babies with Lester Holt on 8/17/06; and discussed the truth behind the latest nutrition trends on 7/26/06. Ms. Somer has also been a regular guest on "AM Northwest", including 7/24/06 , where she discussed Nutrition Through the Ages. Also appearing on ABC's "The View" 7/21/06, Ms. Somer promoted her book "10 Habits That Mess Up a Woman's Diet", and discussed hidden calories in cool summer drinks.
ExSci Senior Interviewed for Newspaper
Laura Dix ('07) was interviewed by the Woodburn Independent. "Infants up to one year may have free eye exam. Babies ages six to 12 months of age are now encouraged to have an eye exam through a national program called InfantSEE. Eye and vision problems, if detected early, may be corrected. 'One in 10 babies have a chance of having an eye problem,' said Laura Dix, of Woodburn. 'If they are having problems and it's not detected, by the time they get to preschool and kindergarten they could be having learning problems.' Dix is a senior at Willamette University studying exercise science. She is promoting InfantSee as a senior project." Full Story.

Julianne Abendroth-Smith loves to hike with her teenage daughters, but as a professor of exercise science at Willamette University, she wondered if trekking poles could help prevent soreness and knee injuries during their seven-mile jaunts in the Three Sisters Wilderness." 7/19/06.
Professors Published in CUR Focus
Professors Stasinos Stavrianeas and Peter Harmer's article"Destination Bio2010: Taking the Road Less Traveled" was published in CUR Focus, June 2006, Volume 26, Number 4. Their article outlines how the Willamette University Department of Exercise Science curriculum was "redesigned and laboratory activities were added as appropriate, so that students practice investigative, inquiry-based learning and critical and independent thinking in accordance with the most advanced models for scientific education described in the Bio2010 report." The Bio2010 report (National Research Council, 2003) "calls for changes in biology curricula to enhance interdisciplinary thinking and prepare student to enter biomedicine, a field that encompasses bench scientists and clinicians alike." CUR Focus is published quarterly by Council on Undergraduate Research.
Professor Receives Grant
Professor Julianne Abendroth-Smith received $2,500 Atkinson Faculty Development Grant for 2006-07 for her work "Effects of hiking poles on balance, muscle use, and knee valgus angles in downhill hikers." The Atkinson Faculty Development Program supports and encourage active scholarship and continuing professional development. Trough this program Willamette University affirms that research, artistic activity, enhancement of teaching, and other forms of continuing professional development are essential for sustaining the vitality of the university's curricula, promoting its academic reputation,a dn contributing to the body of knowledge in disciplines, professions, and interdisciplinary fields of study. Commensurate with the university's emphasis on high academic quality, the program provides funding for projects selected through a competitive review process. 6/06
ExSci Alum and ExSci Professor Present at Symposium
Chris Murphy ['05] and Professor Julianne Abendroth-Smith gave a slide presentation at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Denver Colorado. The title was "Effects of external ankle support on plantar flexed inversion." Professor Abendroth-Smith also gave a slide presentation with Michael Bohne on "Muscular changes resulting from pole use in loaded downhill walking." 6/2/06.
