ICL: Institute for Continued Learning

About ICL

ICL in the classroom Willamette University's Institute for Continued Learning was established in 1992 to serve retired and semi-retired persons wishing to explore opportunities for continued learning in an academic environment.

Lecture/dicussion sessions cover the range of the liberal arts and sciences. Individual instructors are chosen not only from Willamette University current and retired faculty, but also from qualified guest speakers and ICL members.

Classes meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, morning and afternoon, throughout the University's two semesters. There is usually one off-campus field trip per semester.

The progam is non-credit, and there are no examinations. An annual incidental fee of $125 is required for participation.

Program Details

Members receive university identification cards giving access to the reading/study rooms and the book and periodical collections of the University's Hatfield Library. Members have free admission to most university athletic events and to many special campus lectures. The IDs also entitle members to free transportation on city buses.

Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays l0:00am-12noon and 1:00pm- 3:00pm in Smullin Hall, Lecture Room B-17.

The instructional program is designed by Institute members who serve on the Curriculum Committee.

Institute Operations are managed by an annually elected Board: Executive Director/Board Chair, Director of Curriculum Services, Director of University Support Services, Director of Membership Services, Director of Financial Services, Director of Secretarial Services, Director of Social Services and Director of Information Services.

Current membership is 160, a number limited by the available meeting space, and there is a waiting list to join.
