Music study at Willamette University engages students simultaneously with the masterworks of the past along with the creations of modern and contemporary music in many genres. Our program is modeled on the knowledge that music is not only one of the oldest of the liberal arts but is also a living art informed by the culture of its time. Through a comprehensive program of performance, composition, improvisation, music historical and theoretical studies, coupled with work in a broad spectrum of courses in other disciplines, students emerge from our program with a solid foundation in technique and an artistic vision developed through close reading, listening and performing in a variety of contexts.
Our music faculty is one of the strongest in the Northwest. Creativity is modeled by each of our faculty members through performance and composition at the highest professional level. Such experience is generously passed along to each student through individual lessons or tutorials in voice, instrument or composition.
Performance opportunities abound, from solo performances to chamber music and jazz groups to our larger student ensembles including Chamber Choir, University Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Collective, Willamette Singers, Dramatic Vocal Arts Ensemble and our associated partner in the community, the Salem Chamber Orchestra.
Admission, Scholarships and Financial Aid
Music students applying for admission may audition before members of the music faculty for a music scholarship. If an applicant is unable to appear personally, a performance CD may be sent in lieu of the personal audition and interview.
A number of music scholarships, as well as other forms of institutional financial aid are awarded to entering students. Student employment opportunities under the Federal Work-Study program also are available to music students; these include accompanying, work in the music office and various secretarial and clerical jobs for music faculty.
Concerts and Recitals
The Music Department presents a regular series of concerts and recitals performed by university ensembles, students and faculty. Music students and faculty engage in extensive concert activities both on and off campus. The major performing ensembles of the department tour regularly throughout the Northwest, California and Canada. Read More

Music majors are required to participate in an ensemble every semester. At the beginning of every year, a Music Student Handbook is distributed to all prospective music majors. The Handbook outlines departmental policies and contains sample curricula from the various music major programs.
