Deitz earned his BS in Arts and Letters in 1990 and his MS in
Teaching in 1994 from Portland State University. He has studied
classical/jazz bass with Robert Illadky and Jeff Bradetich at
the University of Oregon, Edward Rainbow at North Texas State
University and Larry Zagonc at Portland State University.
He has the following teaching experience:'79-'80: Ludwig/Zilgian
sponsored college jazz clinics series with University of Oregon
professors, Charles Dowd and Edward Kammerer; '83-'86: Oregon
Young Audience Association: "Jazz: the American Art Form" with
Warner Bros. author/ guitarist, Don Latarski; '89-'93: Tigard-Tualatin
Public School District. Taught 5th - 12th grade string orchestra
, general music, electronic keyboard; '93-'94: undergraduate
teaching assistant at Portland State University: teaching duties
included theory I/keyboard I, assistant conductor of band and
orchestra; '93-present: instructor of string bass and electric
bass at Clackamas Community College, Lewis and Clark College,
Mt. Hood Community College, Reed College and Willamette University.
Currently active as an artist/clinician/adjudicator throughout
the northwest.

Jazz/Classical performance includes: Music Festivals include
appearances at the Oregon Bach Festival, Eugene Celebration,
Sokol Blosser, Hinman, Rex Hill, Adelsheim Winery jazz festivals,
the Bite, Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, Blue Lake Festival,
Jazz on the Water series, the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, Berkley
Jazz Festival, Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle, Washington,
Du Marier Jazz Festival in Edmonton, Alberta, Parnu Jazz Festival
in Parnu, Estonia; Tivoli Gardens Jazz Cabernet in Stockholm,
Sweden. Solo and duo performances at the NAMM show in Los Angeles,
California for Conklin custom guitars and basses.
Orchestral work includes section bass with the Eugene Symphony,Oregon
Ballet Theater, St. Joseph's Chamber Orchestra, Portland Opera
Company, Festival Chorale Oregon, Oregon Festival of American
Music, Portland Chamber Orchestra, principal bass with Salem
Chamber Orchestra and Portland's Sinfonia Concertante. Touring
Boradway shows include "Evita," "Grease," "Big," "The Sound
of Music," "Vitor/Victoria," and "My Fair Lady."
Jazz and pop concerts with national recording artists: Mose
Allison, Art Blakey (Bluenote), Blue Sky (Bannerworks), Mel
Brown, Dave Brubeck, Brenda Dickey (Warner Bros.), Herb Ellis,
Richie Cole, Sheena Easton, Dave Fishberg, Robert Goulet, Tom
Grant, Marvin Hamlisch, Michael Harrison (Sheffield Labs), Jeff
Kashiwa (of The Rippingtons), Nancy King, Andre Kitaev, Alan
Paul (of Manhattan Transfer), Richard Smith (Heads Up), John
Stowell, Sally Struthers, Toni Tenille, Leroy Vinnegar, Mason
Williams.

Original work for brass choir, Connestoga; works for four-handed
piano, solo string bass, sketches for small combinations of
winds and brass; jazz arrangement of Danny Boy and original
composition "Helen Ann" recorded on Los Angeles Guitarists,
Richard Smith's CD's "Puma Creek" (CMB) and "Inglewood" (Blue
Moon" [Japan release]. Received "heavy rotation" in Japanese
markets and in San Francisco, Dallas and Boston; incidental
music for Arthur Miller's The Crucible directed by Oregon Shakespeare
