Randy Kem

Randy has taught saxophone and clarinet privately for 25 years. His students consistently compete for top honors. As guest clinician for schools in Washington, Oregon and California, Randy clinics as much as his schedule permits. He has assisted with symphonic and jazz bands in five Salem high schools and ten middle schools.

Recent engagements include:

  • Performance with the Willamette University Jazz Ensemble at the 2004 OMEA State Conference.
  • Recorded and performed with the Card-Nord-Hoffmann trio throughout the Willamette Valley as well as recorded a live radio show for "Soundscapes" broadcast from Seattle.
  • Performed with Benny Golson at the Willamette University Jazz Festival XXI.
  • Performed with Herbie Mann at the Willamette University Jazz Festival XX.
  • Performed with own jazz combo "Unbounded Set" for the Salem-Keizer Middle School Jazz Festival, and was also an adjudicator.
  • Performed Eugene Bozza's "Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra" and Mihaud's "La Creation du Monde" with the Salem Chamber Orchestra.
  • Performed Ron Nelson's "Danza Capriccio" for alto saxophone and band and "Flight of the Bumble Bee" with the Salem Concert Band.
  • Presented a recital of saxophone chamber music for the World Saxophone Congress.
  • Guest clinician and adjudicator for the District 14 Solo/Ensemble Contest in Portland, OR.

Randy and partner Hijirah have performed for over 20 years, creating original music and art in concert halls, night clubs and art galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest. They have two grown sons and operate Kemtone Repair Co., servicing woodwind, brass and percussion instruments for 15 years.
