WIND ENSEMBLES

WIND ENSEMBLE
The 40-45 person Wind Ensemble is an auditioned ensemble of the most experienced wind and percussion players on campus. This flexible-instrumentation ensemble performs the most challenging wind ensemble and chamber wind literature, while rehearsing twice weekly. The Wind Ensemble performs frequently on campus and on tours throughout the Northwest and Western states. Wind Ensemble players must be concurrently enrolled in University Band.

UNIVERSITY BAND
With Wind Ensemble personnel at its core, the University Band adds all university students desiring to continue their band experience at the college level. Players rehearse together once a week, with additional sectionals required. University Band performs on campus several times each semester in conjunction with the Wind Ensemble, and participates in the fall band retreat. No audition is required for participation in University Band.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE
The Willamette University Jazz Ensemble is a full-sized big band, open to all university students on an audition basis, performing the finest literature from the big band tradition. The group performs regularly at campus "Jazz Nights," in local festivals, and on semi-annual tours. This group hosts the annual Willamette University Jazz Festival, now in its 24th year.

JAZZ COMBOS
Jazz Combos are organized according to interest, ability level of students, and availability of rhythm section players. Students desiring to participate in a jazz combo will perform an audition. Combos perform in the Bistro and on campus "Jazz Nights."

INSTRUMENTAL CHAMBER ENSEMBLES
Chamber Ensembles, meeting for two hours per week are organized according to the interest and availability of players. Ensembles are offered in single-instrument choirs and mixed ensembles across the wind and percussion spectrum.

ORCHESTRA & CHAMBER MUSIC

SALEM CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
(There will also be occasional evening and weekend rehearsals prior to concerts). This is a semi-professional orchestra of 45 members which unites Willamette student instrumentalists with the music faculty and musicians from the community, both professional and volunteer. The result is an outstanding orchestra which performs a wide variety of orchestral literature from the 17th through the 21st centuries, including symphonies, concertos, choral/orchestral works and a host of other fine compositions. Each year the orchestra performs five subscription series concerts. All students, regardless of major, are invited to audition. The audition will include a selection of your own choosing and sight-reading.

UNIVERSITY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Exploration of literature for chamber orchestra with special emphasis on music for strings. Spring semester may include performing as part of the orchestra for the productions of Dramatic Vocal Arts. Open to all students through interview.

CHAMBER ENSEMBLES
Chamber music, with its one-on-a-part format, is one of the best ways to develop a strong sense of teamwork in a musical ensemble while learning individual responsibility for one's own role in that ensemble. Experienced violinists, violists, and cellists are invited to audition for Willamette's undergraduate string quartet, the Waller Quartet, which performs regularly on and off campus. Other groups which include piano, string bass, or winds may also be formed, depending on student interest. Flutists, oboists, clarinetists, bassoonists, and French horn players are encouraged to audition for a position in the undergraduate woodwind quintet, and brass players including French horn players should consider trying out for one of the brass ensembles, such as the brass quintet. Every attempt is made to group players with other players of the same level of ability.

CHORAL MUSIC

Our choral program is structured to provide a wide variety of music opportunities to students who have backgrounds which range from limited experience to those with years of training. Most of our groups have at least 70% of their membership made up of non-music majors.

CHAMBER CHOIR
This choir consists of 36-44 singers and will engage in a tour (usually taken during the winter break) as well as frequent on-campus performances. Literature is drawn from the best of classical repertoire from all historical periods. Members must have significant experience in singing and are required to audition for entrance. Although Chamber Choir usually consists mostly of upperclasspersons, new students are encouraged to audition.

WILLAMETTE SINGERS
This group of 12 voices, piano, bass and drums will concentrate on vocal jazz and will share performance dates with the Willamette Jazz Ensemble on our popular Jazz Nights. This group participates in a yearly tour and in recent years has traveled to Japan, Boston, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Chicago, Washington, Idaho, California and New York. Members must have significant experience in singing and/or instrument playing and are required to audition for entrance. Students interested in playing in the instrumental combo should contact Professor Tim Robblee at (503) 370-6259 for an audition time. Special Note: We are always interested in finding more rhythm section players.

WILLAMETTE MASTER CHORUS
Master Chorus combines vocalists from the Salem community with Willamette students to form a 60-member choir. The group specializes in performing large choral works with orchestra and gives concerts three to four times annually. Members have significant experience in singing and are required to audition for entrance.

MALE ENSEMBLE WILLAMETTE
VOCE FEMMINILE
These two groups will be of particular interest to those students who may not have had extensive choral experience and want to develop their reading skills and vocal technique. Other students join these groups for the opportunity to perform literature written exclusively for male or female voices or because they may not have the time to commit to our other more intensive ensembles. Each ensemble enrolls approximately 30-40 singers from a broad cross section of majors on campus. The ensembles perform approximately 4 times yearly. Literature for Male Ensemble comes from the best of barbershop, doo-wop, popular, and classical music. Voce Femminile will sing classical choral literature from a broad spectrum of historical periods. Twice yearly, the men and women combine to sing music composed for mixed voices. Membership in these groups may be gained through a short, friendly audition in which you will be asked to do rudimentary sight reading and vocalize for voice placement and group assignment.

DRAMATIC VOCAL ARTS
Willamette University Dramatic Vocal Arts offers students a varied experience with staged music. The creative workshop ensemble presents a range of programs including staged opera and musical theatre. The year-long course explores literature in opera, light opera and musicals. Students are involved in all aspects of production and learn not only how to perform in a staged production but also the necessary skills to bring a production to the stage. We will be studying and performing scenes from the Musical Theater and Operatic literature.
