Research Interests
Dr. Beilby's research interests are in experimental tests of gravity. Examples of these experiments are, (1) the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) which will look for gravitational radiation from astronomical sources, and (2) torsion balance experiments which look for deviations from Newton's Law of Gravity and measure the Gravitational Constant. These experiments use extremely sensitive mechanical apparatus, which are made from materials that have low internal friction to minimize the noise from thermal vibrations of the atoms inside the materials used to make the apparatus. Dr. Beilby's research focuses on looking at the mechanical properties of materials, such as the internal friction and tensile strength in such materilas as fused silica and metallic glass.
