You've reached the home page for the student created
Cosmic Ray Detector at Willamette University Physics Department in Salem,
Oregon.
The Cosmic Ray Detector (CRD) was designed and
built by a senior physics student at Willamette during the Fall 2006 and
Spring 2007 semesters to fullfill a requirement for a semester long research
project. The detector is based on a design by Howard
Matis and his students at the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory.
Dr. Matis's website, The
Cosmic Connection, was the inspiration for the
creation of the CRD at Willamette along with a desire to create an experimental
component for particle physics. The CRD allows undergraduate students
access to an area of physics usually associated with multi-million dollar
colliders.
The goal of this webpage is to provide an up to
date resource for students who are interested in pursuing this project.
I've compiled an album of photos I took during
the process and added in a few tips that should help you along the way.
A user guide section outlines some very basic
guidelines for using the detector and some simple troubleshooting tips.
In addition there are links to both Dr. Matis's
website as well as electronics vendors. Finally, the downloads section has current copies of the LBL instruction manual, parts list,
and my senior presentation. |
