Generally speaking the amount of coursework preparation
to teach high school biology, or any science, should be approximately
equivalent to that for a college major in the subject. Choose from
the electives possible within the biology major to pursue special
areas of interest. Breadth of content is usually more important
than depth in preparing to teach in grades 7-12.
For Willamette students, one good choice of biology
courses would begin with:
|
|
|
Bio 125: Biodiversity |
|
|
Bio 130: Cell Biology & Genetics |
|
|
Bio 255: General Ecology |
|
|
Bio 376: Evolutionary Biology |
| Also include at least one course with a research component
and the senior experience (Bio 497
& Bio 498).
In addition, we recommend that the curriculum contain at least one
year of science outside of biology and an elementary statistics course.
Good choices are Chem 115,
Chem 116
and Math 138.
An appropriate course in computer science or instructional technology
would be a good additional elective. |
