The best preparation for becoming an elementary school teacher includes a broad liberal arts education. The future teacher may major in any field if good use is made of the choices for electives. Assuming any specific major, a good preparation for elementary teaching is equivalent to the construction of a second major to add a wise choice of breadth. Assuming a major not in math or science, the following courses would be good electives and choices to fulfill general education requirements.
Elementary Statistics
Math 138 or Soc 348 or Psych 252/253 or Econ 230
Math 220: Math for Elem. Teachers
Bio 110: Principles of Biology
Chem 110: Chemistry
Envr 220: Environmental Systems
Erth 110: Physical Geology

Phys 215 & 236: Intro to Physics I & II

Psych 210: General Psych
Educ 350: Foundations of Reading
The Physics classes, for example, address concepts of motion, simple machines, electricity, magnetism and light. Some of the labs can be adapted to an elementary school level.
