Position Description (2007)
The Rhetoric and Media Studies Department at Willamette University invites applications for a tenure track position in Rhetoric at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek applicants with strong backgrounds in multicultural, ethnic, gender, and/or critical cultural discourses. We strongly encourage candidates with teaching and research interests in these areas, who focus on traditionally underrepresented communities.

Willamette University seeks creative and vibrant educator-scholars who can serve as role models, and who can establish excellent relationships with our increasingly diverse student body. The normal teaching load is three classes per semester, although the university is quickly moving to a normal load of five classes across two semesters. Successful candidates will be exceptional teachers and are expected to engage in scholarship through academic publication, and in service and professional development.
Applicants should expect to teach persuasion, public speaking, and upper division theory or criticism classes in their areas of specialization. The department and the College of Liberal Arts encourage collaborative learning, interdisciplinary teaching, and undergraduate research and writing. The student-faculty ratio is 10.5-1, and class sizes vary from 16-25. The six-member Department of Rhetoric and Media Studies is a robust major, with some 80 of 1750 undergraduates, and offers coursework spanning sub-fields and qualitative methodologies.
Ph.D. should be completed by September 1, 2008. Candidates with relevant areas of specialization in fields such as American, cultural, film, or ethnic studies will be considered, provided that the emphasis is on rhetoric, discourse, or media analysis.
