Dr. Craig and his team will watch and video record Caspian tern (Hydroprogne caspia) chick feeding events at Oregon’s East Sand Island colony. At Willamette University we will analyze data for fish handling biases to the right or left of an adult’s bill (i.e. lateralization of bill loads), size and shape of prey items delivered to chicks in relation to chick age, and the development of prey handling skills among individual chicks and fledglings. Terns are excellent subjects to study lateralization of feeding behavior in the wild and they may allow integration of lateralization with developmental changes.
