Project Title
Experimental Design for the Measurement of Binary Liquid Phase Diagrams
Abstract

Improvements were made to instrumentation designed to measure binary liquid phase diagrams by the cloud point technique. The adiabatic dewar was redesigned to ensure stable optical alignment, to improve thermal isolation of the sample vial, and to ease the changing of samples. A second detector sampling at a different scattering angle was added to confirm the cloud point of each run was not the result of an error in the detectors. Dust in the sample vials was found to be a leading cause of baseline noise and a new vacuum manifold was constructed to prepare dustless, degassed liquid-liquid samples. Initial measurements of the isobutyric acid/water system were begun.
