| Project Title |
| The Non-Coincidence Effect and
Raman Spectroscopy |
| Abstract |
|
Instrumentation for polarization-dependenct
Raman spectroscopy experiments was set up. Raman scans of
CCI4 were recorded and the depolarization ratios
were compared to literature values. The non-coincidence value,
a difference between isotropic and anisotropic peak placement,
was recorded for three different compositions of the acetone/carbon
tetrachloride binary liquid reference system. This data was
taken over the region of 1680 to 1780 cm-1 looking
at the C=O acetone vibration. Satisfactory qualitative agreement
with literature data was obtained. Improvements in quantitative
agreement are expected following the installation of a new
monochromator. A sample housing intended for measuring the
non-coincidence effect as a function of temperature was also
designed.
