How to Apply

To be considered as an applicant for this scholarship, this completed application must be returned to the Chair of your department by February 24, 2009. The Webber Scholars will be announced at the Honors and Awards Convocation in April 2009.

Eligibility

To apply for the 2008-09 academic year, the following requirements must be met:

  • Full-time enrollment
  • Junior standing by fall 2008
  • Declared major in biology, chemistry, environmental science, or physics
  • Cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher
  • At least one year of continuous enrollment at Willamette prior to fall 2008

Selection

One finalist will be selected from each of the four departments (Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Physics) by recommendation of the faculty of that department, after reviewing each application. From the five finalists, four scholarships will be awarded. Each Webber Scholar will receive $4,000 for the 2008-09 academic year.

Requirements

Scholars will be required to participate in an outreach program, which will be designed so that they will be able to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for the sciences with other young people. To this end, each scholar will be responsible for developing two or three hands-on science activities in her field of science for presentation in an elementary school in the area, during a 12 week series. In this Outreach to Schools program, the Webber Scholars, along with other available female professionals, can serve as role models encouraging girls and young women to continue studies for a career in math, science, or engineering. A secondary benefit can be the improvement of math and science programs in the local schools. The time commitment for the Webber Scholarship program is as follows: During the fall semester, all four scholars will meet on a weekly basis, for 1 to 1 hours to organize and plan the group's program. During the spring semester, all four scholars will participate in weekly pre-planning meetings (1 hours) and will participate in weekly school visitations (2 hours) for approximately 12 consecutive weeks (excluding spring break). Each scholar will be responsible for either leading a week's presentation or helping to facilitate another scholar's presentation.
